Why Smart Grid is essential for Energy Infrastructure

The rising demand for the preservation of energy around the world has been at the forefront of the development of the smart grid infrastructure. The increasing role of renewable energy solutions in the energy mix and inclination of countries towards smart cities will also propel the growth of the smart grid ecosystem.

It is expected that the smart grid market will grow globally to USD 61.3 billion by 2023 at a CAGR of 20.9% from 2018 to 2023. The factor that will drive growth for the smart grid infrastructure is the modernization of the traditional grids and rising awareness regarding carbon footprints reductions.

In this trend, South Asia will set to become a leading hub for smart grid infrastructure investment in the next decade. According to a recent study, the region is expected to invest around $25.9 billion over a period of 2020-29 with an aim to modernize the power sector where India will lead the market. It is expected that grid automation solutions and energy storage system infrastructure will witness a significant development as India lead towards its aim to achieve 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2022, which will include 100 GW from solar, 60 GW from wind, 10 GW from bio-power and 5 GW from small hydro-power.

On the other hand, the new demand is being created by the emerging trends in the market, including the growth of data centers, renewable energy sources, and sunrise sectors such as EV Charging infrastructure. To resolve challenges such as technological disruption the operators need to integrate smart grid solutions that can assist the network operators in managing the expectations of customers for reliable power supply.

Smart grids use a range of digital technologies and IoT solutions that can intelligently respond and adapt to changes in the grid. The data collected can be harvested to create decisions and recommendations for the grid operators to become more reliable, cost-efficient, flexible, and safe.

Role of smart inverter in supporting smart grid

Further to enhance the output and support operators with better results, other renewable energy technologies such as solar inverter solutions and energy storage system solutions can play a significant role. When solar inverter solutions collaborate with smarts grids it can support to monitor and control the power flow with better system stability in real-time.

Solar Inverters convert the generated direct current (DC) by the power source into alternating current (AC) for the purpose of consumption. They can serve as a prime source of energy conversion between clean but irregular power sources such as solar and wind. It can support in matching the supplied power as per consumer requirements while interacting with larger power grids.

Smart Inverter and advanced communication technologies can create a more reliable and controllable fleet of DERs enabling a smooth transition to a smart grid with multiple connected solar systems.

How Delta can support the smart grid infrastructure

At Delta Electronic India we understand the shifting paradigm and supporting the industry to meet the changing demand in building robust renewable energy infrastructure. The growing role of renewable energy is putting challenges for the grid with a high penetration level of DER (Distributed Energy Resources) while functioning with a solar inverter. Addressing this issue Delta Solar Inverter Solutions offers Smart Inverters enabling smart and cost-effective designs for industrial and small utility-scale PV power plant with a vision of Delta Powering Green Energy. It can support in maximizing energy yield even in challenging landscapes and locations. The stability of the transmission system can be maintained and strengthened through the active contributions of DELTA smart inverters. Grid operators across the globe benefit from new technologies such as the ability to supply reactive power both night and day, intelligent and flexible PV plant regulation with the Power Plant Controller, and communication interfaces integrated into the inverter Delta smart inverters have proven as a perfect choice for Grid management services like dynamic reactive power feed & Output power throttling capabilities and compliance to complex HVRT, LVRT requirements of large scale PV plants. DELTA’s shade tolerant Hill Climbing MPPT algorithm technology allows for tracking of dynamically changing global power peaks with no significant decrease in traditional static and dynamic tracking result in maximum efficiency, in turn, maximize output power generation. DELTA’s smart IV curve diagnosis technology allows the inverter to export IV curves, deploys algorithms on the management system, and analyzes data. It also identifies modes to scan all PV strings of a PV plant and identify hidden PV module faults. DELTA’s Smart I – V Curve Diagnosis is able to carry out online I – V curve analysis on entire strings with an advanced diagnosis algorithm. The scanning helps to find out and identify the strings with low performance or faults, which enables proactive maintenance which results in higher O& M efficiency and lower operation cost. Additionally Delta’s PRO-EL Mode assistance to the Electroluminescence imaging test helps a lot to O&M people to save significant Man-hours and time while examining the SPV array.

SUNSPEC & MODBUS are the industry standard communication protocols designed to achieve interoperability between Distributed Energy Resource (DER) components and smart grid applications. Alongside Wired based MODBUS & SUNSPEC protocols, Wi-Fi-based Communication is also available with which users can monitor the solar system working situation through either computer or APP using his smartphone/PC. The User can check today, monthly & total energy harvest along with many more parameters etc.
