Prime Minister Modi responded to Renesas Electronics’ tweet, stating that he had a productive meeting with Mr. Toshi Shibata, where they discussed technology, innovation, and India’s progress in the semiconductor world. Renesas Electronics also expressed their commitment to enabling the semiconductor ecosystem and digital infrastructure in India, emphasizing their dedication to India’s vision for a digital future.

Earlier in March, Prime Minister Modi had a meeting with Kurt Sievers, the CEO of NXP Semiconductors. During their discussion, they explored the transformative landscape in the semiconductor and innovation sectors. Prime Minister Modi tweeted about the meeting, expressing happiness at meeting Mr. Kurt Sievers and discussing the evolving landscape in semiconductors and innovation. He acknowledged India’s emergence as a significant player in these industries, powered by its talented youth.

NXP Semiconductors NV, a Dutch semiconductor designer and manufacturer headquartered in Eindhoven, Netherlands, with global presence, was the subject of the meeting.

To enhance semiconductor manufacturing in India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, announced in February that the government would introduce a program to propel the country’s semiconductor journey over the next ten years. In December 2021, the government launched the Semicon India Programme with an allocation of Rs 76,000 crore. This program aims to support the development of the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India.

In 2023, the minister informed the parliamentary consultative committee that several state governments, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, are in discussions with companies to establish semiconductor manufacturing plants and fab complexes.

In summary, Renesas Electronics’ CEO, Toshi Shibata, and NXP Semiconductors’ CEO, Kurt Sievers, both had productive meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, discussing technology, innovation, and India’s progress in the semiconductor industry.
