India’s Electronic Manufacturing Set to Double in Five Years: Government Sources

According to sources from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, India’s electronic manufacturing sector is projected to double within the next five years.

The ministry source stated that the country’s electronic manufacturing is expected to reach approximately USD 250 billion over this period, a significant increase from the current export value of USD 125-130 billion.

In a bid to tackle unemployment, the government aims to double the number of jobs in the electronic manufacturing sector from the current 2.5 million to around 5 million in the next five years.

“Our focus remains on providing services to digital technology and scaling up large-scale electronics manufacturing. These goals are steadfast and will only accelerate,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology.

The sources also noted that India is moving towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar) in certain segments like mobile phones, transitioning from import substitution to becoming an export-driven manufacturer. For laptops, India is currently in the process of achieving self-reliance.

The Indian government has allocated Rs 760 billion through various incentive schemes to boost electronic manufacturing in the country. Despite India’s per capita electronic consumption being one-fourth of the global average, significant strides are being made.

In terms of imports, China and Hong Kong dominate, contributing 44% and 16% respectively to India’s total electronic imports. On the export front, mobile phones and Electronic Control Units (ECUs) lead, with the United States and UAE being the primary destinations, absorbing a substantial portion of India’s electronic exports.

Experts highlight that India’s electronic manufacturing sector is transforming, positioning the nation as a burgeoning global electronics manufacturing hub, which will drive economic growth, job creation, and technological innovation.
